History
2004 and beyond

The first Hundred Years saw a slow pace of change for a world which itself moved slowly – the next hundred years would no doubt progress faster and further. In 2005 the Club saw the election of a woman, Angela Daniel, as the Club’s chairman – the first in 102 years – something the founders would never have envisaged in their just post Victorian world and in 2007 the first non-British person took the chairmanship, in the person of Dr. Stuart Blacksell, an Australian. In 2006 the Club sought to re-invent its positioning in the expatriate market recognising increasing competition from bars, restaurants and health clubs, and it became marketed as “an International Club for Family and Friends”. Also 2006 a Club Development Master Plan was agreed by members to reflect this more family orientation. In 2007 the first phase saw the redevelopment of the ground floor of the Clubhouse interiors: The ‘Churchill Bar’ was moved into the ‘Lords Dining Room’, and ‘The Verandah’ cafe took over the old Churchill Bar. Sadly the Club was let down badly by contractors and project managers and both schemes took far longer to complete to members’ satisfaction and far exceeded the budgets. The result was that by 2010 the remainder of the 2006 Master Plan had to be abandoned and a new plan of development on a much slower pace had to be considered. In 2011, the British Club Bangkok is celebrating its Ninth Cycle of existence (108 years) and is re-launching itself to emphasise more what makes us different from all the competition in that, with our membership, range of facilities, associated and community groups and our history, we are “the social, sports and cultural centre for the English speaking community in Bangkok”. |
