Welcome to one of the Club’s newest and fastest growing sections – Balut. Founded in August 2007, we have grown to 45 paid-up members and play three types of Balut, nearly every day of the week.
BAR BALUT
This is a social game of Balut that is played most evenings in the Churchill Bar, and at weekends in The Verandah and in the Silom Sala. Balut sets are freely available at all these outlets and if you do not know how to play, just ask.
TOURNAMENT BALUT
We play two types of internal tournaments, the Balut Shield and the Balut Cups.
Balut Shield
This is a test of long-term skill – you play as many of the twice-monthly Balut shield tournaments as you can, and you are leagued by your best six tournament results. Each tournament has two prizes, bottles of wine sponsored by OUTRUGGER HOTELS & RESORTS, and they are awarded for highest aggregate score and highest single score of the tournament. Tournaments play each first and third Wednesday from 7.05pm and last about two hours.
On the Balut Shield Awards Night each September the highest average of the year wins the Balut Shield and the highest single score of the year wins the Balut Shield Cup – both are on permanent display in the Churchill Bar.
Balut Cups Night
This is a ‘winner-takes-all’ event held in February each year where one plays five games in one tournament to win the Balut Cup. There is also a Balut Junior Cup for those children of members (under 21) and children over 21 in full-time education. This event is also co-hosted with the Balut All-Comers Cup for visiting players from overseas and the evening ends with the award of the Lowest Score Cup! Again the cups are on permanent display in the Churchill Bar.
INTERNATIONAL BALUT
British Club Bangkok Balut plays the STC (Singapore Town Club) version of Balut so we join the 20 or so other Members’ Clubs in SE Asia each year in the STC Interport Competition. As a newcomer we hosted the 28th tournament in 2008 and then won the 29th tournament last year at the Sabah Golf & Country Club. As a result we will host the 30th tournament on 19th to 21st November 2010.
BALUT WALL OF HONOUR
In the Churchill Bar we display all our cups and Shields, together with the STC Interport Cup and the scores cards of those with the highest (and lowest) scores recorded in the Club. The current world highest score record is 169 and held by our Club member Simon Davies.
